Pokerroom.com is now closed, a once popular poker site now goes down in historyAs of the 14th April 2009, PokerRoom.com is closed with the parent company Bwin opting to shut the site down rather than continue maintaining it.

Former players of Pokerroom.com were advised via email that PokerRoom will be disabled from the 14th April with the option to either cash out their funds or transfer them to the new owners site BWIN Poker with bonuses being offered to those preferring to transfer their bankrolls over.

PokerRoom.com closed

PokerRoom were amongst the earliest of poker rooms created on the internet in 1999 by Swedish poker player Oskar Hörnell and Claes Lidell when online poker was nowhere near as developed as it is now days. The two founders partnered with Karl Hörnell who developed the original software.

The traffic at PokerRoom.com grew in leaps and bounds in 2003 when Chris Moneymaker won the WSOP Main Event and online poker became recognised worldwide. PokerRoom became a leader in the fields and went on to become the #1 Ongame Network site, Ongame network at the time was called the PokerNetwork.

Early 2006, Austrian owned bwin bought out Ongame e-solutions AB thereby having owning rights to Pokerroom.com, soon thereafter the UIGEA was implemented which saw the withdrawal of PokerRoom from the US poker market which saw a decline in American based players despite these tough times Pokerroom was still fairly busy however the traffic eventually started slowing and Bwin took the decision to rather close the old rooms doors and fully promote their now flagship site Bwin Poker.

PokerRoom will go down as history as a founder of the now ever so popular poker sites we see in existence without them who knows how online poker would have developed.
