Democratic Barack Obama has been leading Republican John McCain in most national polls throughout this year. Until the recent polls indicate that McCain might be closing in on Barack Obama.

A recent Los Angeles Times poll indicates that Obama is leading by two percent which is close to a tie. Polls in June showed Obama leading by 12 percent. Polls can often contradict themselves as a recent Reuters poll indicated that John McCain was in fact leading by five percent.

If you've been following the campaigners lately you would have noticed a tone from both camps.  John McCain has been criticizing the opponents plans instead of what his plans are for Iraq. In retaliation Barack Obama has criticized the Republican’s proposed economic initiatives.

Negative campaigning and critical attacks on rival political party's in elections has been common throughout America’s democratic history. Political scientists have proven that negative campaigning does work.
